About 1800 years ago, the king Karikala of the Early Chola dynasty saw a mighty river that came gushing from the forests. At the same time, the agricultural land of Cholamandalam, or the Kaveri delta region, saw inclement weather conditions. Having to depend only on the rains for irrigation, the farmers had a choice between extreme drought or extreme flooding of the Cauvery. At Kavarapattu, the Kollidam River makes one final curve to end its meandering journey.

It had been four years since I last visited Norway, and the world saw some huge shifts after COVID. After a long seven-hour flight, I landed in Oslo at 7:20 am on the 14th of June. I had yet another flight to catch, this time a short one from Oslo to Bergen. I reached Gudvangen camp at 7:00 pm. There I met Aman, an Irish paddler who works in Northern Norway as a SUP guide. There was a new caravan, new equipment, and new faces. The expedition would start in two days.

After discovering what I wanted to do and why I wanted to do it, then what to and what not to do, I started focusing on how to do it. From 2015 to mid-2017, PFF was a program for Discover SUP. Lots of RnD was going on to figure out all the logistics. If today an expedition can be planned and executed almost flawlessly, it is because of all the planning, grinding, and actually getting our hands dirty back then.

Stand-Up Paddling in the Norwegian fjords last year had left a momentous impact on me. It was no mean feat to be trusted to lead an expedition in the unknown waters. Everything from the landscape, the wilderness on the other end of the planet, the waters, the experience, and of course, my friendship with Titus, left me wanting for more. Like a cow chewing the cud, I was reliving my experience of Norway everywhere I went.
